Aayu Health for Women

All Gynae Surgeries

Women’s health encompasses a broad spectrum of medical interventions, including various gynecological surgeries to address specific health concerns. These procedures, collectively known as “Gynae procedures,” play a crucial role in diagnosing, treating, and managing conditions affecting the female reproductive system.

From routine procedures to complex surgeries, the field of gynecological surgery encompasses a diverse range of interventions tailored to meet the unique healthcare needs of women across different stages of life.

In this introductory overview, we delve into the realm of gynecological surgeries, exploring their significance, common types, advancements in surgical techniques, and their impact on women’s health and well-being.

Common Gynecologic Procedures

Below are some of the common gynecologic procedures that you should know about:-

Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows the doctor to examine the inside of the uterus using a thin, lighted instrument called a hysteroscope. It is commonly used to diagnose and treat conditions such as abnormal bleeding, polyps, submucosal fibroids, uterine septum, and intrauterine adhesions (Asherman’s syndrome).

Loop Electrical Excision Procedure (LEEP)

LEEP is a surgical procedure used to remove abnormal cervical tissue, particularly in cases of cervical dysplasia or precancerous changes detected during a Pap smear or colposcopy. It involves using a thin wire loop heated by an electrical current to excise the abnormal tissue.

Myomectomy

Myomectomy is the surgical removal of uterine fibroids while preserving the uterus. It is performed for symptomatic fibroids causing pelvic pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, infertility, or pressure symptoms. Myomectomy can be done through open abdominal surgery, laparoscopy, or hysteroscopy, depending on the size and location of fibroids.

Hysterectomy

A hysterectomy involves the surgical removal of the uterus. It is performed for various reasons, including uterine fibroids, abnormal bleeding, chronic pelvic pain, endometriosis, and certain cancers. Depending on the indication and patient’s health, different approaches can be used, such as abdominal, vaginal,  laparoscopic or robotic hysterectomy.

Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows the doctor to view and operate inside the abdomen and pelvis using a laparoscope (a thin, lighted instrument). It is used for various gynecological purposes, such as diagnosing and treating conditions like endometriosis, ovarian cysts, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), and ectopic pregnancy.

Colposcopy

Colposcopy is a procedure that uses a special magnifying instrument called a colposcope to examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva for abnormal cells, precancerous changes, or signs of infection. It is often recommended after an abnormal Pap smear result to further evaluate the cervix and guide biopsy if needed.

Endometriosis Surgery

Endometriosis surgery involves removing endometrial tissue (similar to the lining of the uterus) that has grown outside the uterus, causing pain, inflammation, and possible infertility. Surgical options include laparoscopic excision of endometriosis lesions, adhesiolysis (removing adhesions), and, in severe cases, hysterectomy or removal of ovaries (oophorectomy).

Endometrial Ablation

Endometrial ablation is a procedure that destroys the uterine lining (endometrium) to reduce or stop menstrual bleeding. It is often recommended for women with heavy periods (menorrhagia) who have not responded to other treatments. Common techniques include thermal ablation, radiofrequency ablation, and cryoablation.

Tubal Ligation

Tubal ligation, also known as female sterilization or “getting one’s tubes tied,” is a permanent birth control method. It involves closing or blocking the fallopian tubes to prevent sperm from reaching the egg, thus preventing pregnancy. Tubal ligation can be performed using different techniques, including laparoscopic procedures and mini-laparotomy

These common gynecologic procedures play crucial roles in diagnosing, treating, and managing various gynecological conditions, improving women’s health outcomes, and addressing reproductive health concerns effectively.
